GIST: Advanced GI Endoscopy Workshop

Description

This highly practical comprehensive program will cover a broad range of common clinical scenarios that require more advanced endoscopic techniques for management and will be delivered through focused discussion sessions followed by small group hands-on stations utilising the latest endoscopic devices.

Participants may gain valuable experience on equipment from the clinical setting and will consolidate their knowledge of latest techniques, demonstrated by experts in therapeutic endoscopy.

This workshop is suitable for Trainees and Consultants in Gastroenterology and Endoscopy.  Attendees must be competent in basic endoscopic techniques and /or have participated in CTEC's Introductory Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Workshop.  This workshop is highly recommended for all endoscopists wishing to expand their knowledge in advanced endoscopic skills.

Eligible WA based participants will receive a 50% subsidy of the workshop fee due to generous support from the WA Cancer and Palliative Care Network.

Workshop Content
Day 1 - Upper GI Practical Animal Tissue and Mechanical Simulation Session
The Endoscopic Approach to Upper GI /Bleeding (Variceal / Non-Variceal)
Haemostasis techniques for non-variceal bleeding - APC, endoscopic clips and injection/diathermy
Haemostasis techniques for variceal bleeding - endoscopic banding and Sengstaken-Blakemore tube
Angiodysplasia - APC and clipping
Bleeders - sclerotherapy, injector (Gold Probe) and clipping
 
Management of Benign Strictures
Endoscopic dilatation - including bougie and balloon dilatation
Foreign body retrieval
Upper GI polypectomy skills, including management of complications  
 
Day 2 - Lower GI Practical Animal Tissue and Mechanical Simulation Session
Management of Colonic Bleeding and PEG Tubes
Colon polyps, colon bleeders and PEGS
SPOTTattoo injection techniques
Polyp characterisation, from normal to abnormal
Treatment of gastric varices (gluing and stent)
Discussion: Approach to the difficult endoscopy - advice from an expert
 
Participants will use animal (porcine) tissue* models (Koken model, EASIE).

Learning Outcomes

  1. Deepen understanding and skills in both upper & lower procedures
  2. Demonstrate an increase in skills required to perform colonoscopic examination, biopsy and foreign body retrieval techniques
  3. Gain increased confidence and a greater understanding in treating the following: GI Bleeding. Oesophageal strictures and Mucosal polyps
  4. Deepen understanding with case discussion of complications of colonoscopy
  5. Increase skills in the management of Colon Bleeding.
