JDocs: Emergency Airways

Description

This workshop is highly relevant for those interested in applying for anaesthetics, ED, ICU and surgical specialties. This one-day hands-on workshop features practical stations including anatomical landmarks, didactic sessions and case studies and discussions.  Hands-on sessions are guided by expert faculty and focus on the incisions and percutaneous insertions involved in a surgical airway.

Workshop Content

Participants will rotate through a number of interactive animal tissue and model practical sessions and presentations.

Chest Drains - Placement and Management:

  • Chest drainage
  • Intercostal catheter insertion and suturing
  • Thoracentesis
  • Needle decompression for tension pneumothorax

Airway Management:

  • Oxygen delivery and bag mask delivery
  • Endotracheal intubation
  • Airway basics and laryngoscopy
  • Rapid insufflation

Surgical Airways:

  • Emergency needle cricothyrotomy
  • Anatomy landmarks and surgical cricothyrotomy
  • Percutaneous tracheostomy
  • Tracheostomy troubleshooting  

Workshop Inclusions:

  • Practical sessions featuring RACS certified techniques
  • Practical sessions with animal tissue
  • Didactic sessions
  • All meals and refreshments
  • Limited places to maximise practical learning time

Learning Outcomes

  1. Gained knowledge and familiarity with the physiology and anatomy of airways
  2. Gained knowledge and experience in chest drains, their management and placement
  3. Deepen their understanding and skills in surgical airways: cricothyrotomy and tracheostomy
  4. Understand that regular upskilling improves surgical safety and efficiency in basic life support revision with case studies
  5. Gained knowledge and experience with airway management.
