Cultural Awareness - An Introduction to Cultural Safety

Description

AIDA's Cultural Awareness online modules is self-paced, eLearning module designed as an entry point to our cultural safety program. This 3.5-hour course focuses on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture, and peoples as well as the historical context of Indigenous health and application of this knowledge in health practice.

This course has been developed for a broad audience including doctors, nurses, healthcare workers, students, government organisations and universities building their capabilities to apply their learnings in clinical settings.

 


Details

Module 1

1. Examine your own cultural worldviews and values, and describe the implications for health care practice.

2. Analyse the limitations of one’s own perspectives and reflect upon the implications of one’s own worldview for delivering culturally safe health care.

3. Articulate the concept of cultural humility as a process of lifelong learning.

Module 2

1. Describe the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's pre-colonisation and identify key events since colonisation that continue to impact the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

2. Recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ ways of knowing, being and doing in the context of history, culture, and diversity

Module 3

1. Recognise the important role of relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health professionals, organisations and communities.

2. Describe the concept of strengths-based knowledge and communication and how this is used to balance deficit discourses within the Australian context.
