MJA Podcast: Glaucoma, with Dr Jed Lusthaus

Description

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Approximately 300,000 Australians have glaucoma. Anyone can develop glaucoma including 2-3% of Australia's total population.

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that can cause blindness due to damage of the nerve, connecting the eye to the brain. This is usually caused by high eye pressure.

In the early stages of glaucoma, there are virtually no symptoms or warning signs. Regular eye tests are the best way to protect sight from glaucoma damage, including an optic nerve check. Early detection and treatment are vital to slow the progression. Treatment options include eye drops, medication and surgery.

Dr Jed Lusthaus is an ophthalmologist at Sydney Eye Hospital and the University of Sydney. He discusses the management of glaucoma and where future breakthroughs may come from with MJA news and online editor, Cate Swannell.
