Description

This module provides an update for Australian GPs on the management of AF in preventing stroke. It will cover the epidemiology of stroke in Australia, the management of comorbidities, and the current anticoagulation guidelines. It will look at steps for reducing bleeding risk and touch on the role of left atrial appendage occlusion in some patients. Importantly, the prevention of secondary stroke in anticoagulated patients will also be covered.

Sponsor: This activity is sponsored by Abbott Medical

Learning Outcomes

  1. Describe the population groups and comorbidities associated with increased risk of atrial fibrillation and of stroke in the Australian population
  2. Outline the key steps in the management of atrial fibrillation, including: managing risk factors, rate versus rhythm control strategies and commencing oral anticoagulant medication for stroke prevention
  3. Identify patients in whom oral anticoagulation benefit is unclear, for involvement of an interventional cardiologist or stroke neurologist
  4. Outline the rationale for the use of left atrial appendage occlusion in the prevention of AF-associated stroke and identify patients who may be considered for this procedure.
