Simple Auscultation: Listening for common heart valve disease

Description

Heart valve disease is a common presentation in the GP community. Early detection of heart murmurs plays an important role in identifying those at risk of heart valve disease. Heart auscultation plays a vital role in the detection of these patients in general practice, yet can be a challenging skill to maintain.

Join Dr Ryan Markham (Interventional Cardiologist) as he discusses the prevalence and incidence of the different types of heart valve disease, clinical impact, signs and symptoms and shares clinical tips and tricks on heart auscultation and how to assess the severity of disease for our patients.

  1. Outline the aetiology and prognosis of heart valve disease
  2. Identify the different heart sounds and interpret the clinical significance to patient care
  3. Review the current treatment options for varying heart valve conditions and referral pathways when appropriate.
